B&G’s new ultra-fast Triton Edge Sailing Processor delivers more and better data to boost the accuracy and performance of your sailing systems
Another processor, on top of the one I already have inside my MFD? Why would I need that? To understand the benefits available in the new Triton Edge Sailing Processor, a gaze back on the history of B&G is necessary. B&G comes from a heritage of highperformance racing, but a lot of the knowledge gained through more than 50 years on a top competitive level has proven to be useable for cruising as well. It just needs to be adapted and presented differently.
‘Our background is well known’, says Matt Eeles, product director at Navico Group. ‘But most people don’t know that the way we developed previous systems, especially the H5000 and its predecessors, is different from how the more cruising oriented brands develops their systems. We always had a central unit that took care of data processing. Things like advanced true wind calculations were performed and calibrated to become more precise and stable, before it was transmitted to the various displays. The wind data to the autopilot or the chartplotter would simply be better right from the start. If you had multiple displays, they would get the same input and without delay. There was no need for dampening, which is just reacting to an average line of events in the past.’
‘The challenge back then was that you needed someone experienced to handle the configuration and calibration. They were advanced systems, and they somehow needed advanced users. The Triton Edge has a very fast and powerful processor and our famous software of the latest generation, along with a large storage space. But this time we have made sure that the user interface is very simple and intuitive – just like we have become accustomed to from our computers, tablets and smartphones. So, in essence, we can serve really fast and precisely modified data to the system, and make it very easy for sailors to install and use it. You can get access to advanced functions without the previous complexity of handling it correctly.’
So what does is it do? Through the Triton Edge Sailing Processor you can basically control, calibrate and record all your wind and sensor data. It’s fully integrated with the new Zeus S MFD, which has the same interface, but it works well with any H5000, Triton, HV and Nemesis displays, as well as B&G Vulcan or Zeus chartplotters. The UI is only consistent with the Zeus S and Nemesis products.
1.5Gb internal storage is capable of storing all information from the system for about 200 days, provided a daily usage of 7Mb per day. All data is automatically uploaded to the B&G cloud with a subscription-free service. You can always tap into your B&G app and access your peak speed, which wind angles you actually sailed most, along with a multitude of information that’s useable for deciding further upgrades on the boat, planning your next adventures – and better stories at the dock or in the bar.
‘It’s a bit like a digital logbook’, says Eeles, ‘no need for the external services that have been used in the past. Imagine doing the ARC, or some other sailing adventure you have dreamed about. Now everything is automatically documented. Updates are handled directly from the unit via the internet, so no more fussing around with memory cards or USB sticks. And of course, there is online help available at all times.’
On top of that there is the calibration advantage, which gives access to B&G’s world famous advanced software: Wind data better adjusted for mast movements makes your autopilot work better. Updated real-time information on current, wind etc. makes it possible to tack more precisely on laylines.
‘Racers and cruisers ultimately use information very differently’, says Eeles. ‘With the Triton Edge, the material is basically the same in both cases, but the presentation is very different. Cruisers will want to know how to pass a land formation efficiently and know if they can make it to the next port before the tide shifts. Racers will want to know how to improve performance, how to set up and calibrate everything so they can go faster. But it’s all about understanding how you use your boat, and make better decisions.’
