I parked up at the yacht club and was standing at the hatch of the secretary’s ground floor office by ten to nine. The timing was important – I was right on the 9am deadline for entering my boat in our first offshore race. The secretary was on the phone, lost in conversation… he clocked me and I held up my cheque in both hands; the big grin meaning to say: ‘We’re in!’
