JOHN BERTRAND (AUS)
| Nomination |
Given the stellar line-up
of world champions,
America’s Cup sailors
and tacticians and
Olympic medallists, you could have
been forgiven for not expecting the
Finn bronze medallist of 1976 to still
be box office 40 years later at the 2016
Etchells Worlds. In fact, JB cleaned up,
adding another title to a formidable CV
that includes that epoch-setting win
in the 1983 America’s Cup, making him
the toast of the New York Yacht Club…

Why they won |
‘It was like playing full-back against your boyhood hero and even
aged 69 he still kicked 10 goals past us… Respect’ – Jim Badenach;
‘It’s simple, John Bertrand is a legend’ – Marek Zwierz; ‘Amazing
performance by a fantastic sailor… he first thrashed me 45 years
ago so us old boys need to stick together’ – Peter Morton; ‘Classy
and cool’ – Carol Cronin; ‘JB’s been my sailor of the month every
month since September 1983’ – John Lammerts; ‘Top guy, friendly
and helpful… and with both ends of the fleet!’ – Rob Goddard. |
