HEATHER THOMAS (GBR)

 Nomination
No sooner had last month’s winner glided gently into Cowes to take line honours in the Ocean Globe Race, than all eyes went to the tracker to monitor Heather Thomas’s crew on Tracy Edwards’ original 1989 Whitbread racer Maiden – who could still snatch the overall handicap prize under IRC. Well, they could and they did after keeping their foot in the whole way round the world while bringing on yet another great new group of now highly experienced women ocean racers
 Why they won
‘At a time when we need more role models for up-and-coming girl sailors they don’t come any better than this’ – Steve Heppell; ‘Not only winning but doing it all by sextant!’ – Deb Carter; ‘Heather 1st, Tabarly 2nd… that says it all. Classy pair’ – Amy Bridge; ‘Surprised, nope, Heather has always been special’ – Ashia Mahmood; ‘You can’t imagine just how many women Heather has now inspired’ – Lara Embry. ‘And she won with all the other chicks… brilliant!’ – Tracy Pattison!!
