The case for more

Tom Kneen’s JPK 1180 Sunrise is the most successful fully crewed British yacht of the decade to date, with wins in the Fastnet, Middle Sea Race, Sydney Hobart, Caribbean 600 and RORC Yacht of the Year… plus many other races in the RORC’s busy domestic programme. So with the explosion in two-handed offshore racing Kneen explains his firm preference to go racing fully crewed.

People often ask me why I haven’t taken Sunrise into the world of doublehanded racing – which has clearly seen phenomenal growth since I became part of the sport back in 2014. The simple answer is I did try it when Sunrise was a JPK 1080 (a great doublehanded boat) and I really didn’t like it! There were factors at play but most of the reasons I go sailing are lost when I am not part of a team.
