When the sailors were preparing for Beijing 2008 they were fully ready to take on what was expected to be an extremely light-airs competition. The sailing venue, Qingdao, promised strong currents, next to no wind and huge amounts of sea grass. The sea grass could have been a real problem. During the build-up to the Games there were photos of 470s that appeared to be sailing on a cricket pitch, so thick and green was the weed. But the Chinese dealt with the weed. Hundreds of fishermen and their boats were requisitioned to undertake a mass removal of weed in the days preceding and during the Olympic Regatta.
