In the years before 1978 offshore multihull racing involved just a handful of enthusiasts who came together to compete in races in the UK like the Royal Western Yacht Club’s two-handed Round Britain Race and the OSTAR singlehanded transatlantic race – both of which continue to run today.

In those early days it was taken for granted that although multihulls were capable of sailing fast, they were not able to compete upwind with the best keel boats. In reality this ‘poor’ windward performance from the multihulls was probably because the typical multihull owners/sailors had rarely been, by their nature, involved in highly competitive mainstream racing.
