It is now seven years since French ocean racer Tanguy de Lamotte, co-founder of the Initiatives Coeur children’s project, passed the helm of his Imoca to Sam Davies who picked up the mantle with her typical gusto. Now with a new Imoca designed by Sam Manuard – in the same bright red Ferrari colours – Sam is preparing for her fourth Vendée Globe. This famous ‘French’ sailor, who followed up her degree in mechanical engineering from Cambridge with an international sailing debut on the bow of a Mumm 36 at the 1995 world championship, talks life before, during and after her ‘VG phase’ with friend and fellow Vendée Globe and Whitbread racer Patrice Carpentier

Sam Davies was born on 23 August 1974 in Portsmouth, England to a family of enthusiastic sailors. Her grandfather was a renowned submarine commander and as a toddler she took her first steps onboard her parents’ boat. With an engineering degree from the University of Cambridge, Sam began her career in professional sailing competition at the age of 24 with a first round-the-world Jules Verne Trophy attempt in 1998 aboard Royal&Sun - Alliance. Sam is an enthusiastic and communicative person who loves to share her passion for the sea with the public! ‘I like to communicate because I feel lucky to do what I do. It is my role to share as much as I can.’
