After a 22-year wait, the Admiral’s Cup is back! It gives me great pleasure to welcome owners, crews, spectators and past participants to Cowes for what I am sure will be a fantastic event.
The Admiral’s Cup, first held in 1957, has a distinguished history. Like all the best ideas it was hatched over a few drinks, the format evolving between the aperitif - Plymouth gin - and the port. The first Cup first pitted Great Britain against the United States, and at its peak it attracted up to 19 three-boat teams. It also featured many famous names in sailing - British prime minister Sir Edward Heath, America’s Cup star Dennis Conner, and legends Eric Tabarly and Lawrie Smith to name but a few.
