America’s Cup historian Roger Vaughan and photographer Gilles Martin-Raget together produced the official record of Oracle Racing’s unique and successful - Deed of Gift challenge for the America’s Cup in Valencia in 2010. For a number of reasons their book Learning to Fly only recently saw the light of day. So a good time to revisit the original roots of this year’s extraordinary high performance clash in Auckland

Feet wet – monos
While the BMW Oracle Racing 90 – later known by all as USA 17 – was taking shape in Anacortes, in northwest Washington State, Russell Coutts was organising the sailing team to train on both monohulls and multihulls. Quality racing of any sort would suffice to keep the whole team sharp and involved. And the monohull could have been reinstated if an agreement was reached. At this stage anything was still possible.
