Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Whitbread Race, the first fully crewed round-the-world yacht race – a new retro race sailing similar Whitbread yachts, on the same course, using only 1973 technology – will set out from Europe on 10 September 2023. The Ocean Globe Race (OGR) 2023-24 is being organised by Don McIntyre, founder and organiser of the recently completed 2018 Golden Globe Race (GGR). He says, ‘I followed the Whitbread from the very beginning. The early videos from those first races, now fortunately on YouTube, showed that it was all about the sailors, the adventure, the human quality, the simplicity and fun.
